The palace mimics the lavish style of Louis XIV. There are four levels. The external walls are clad in sandstone adorned with classical statues and topped with a patina copper French style roof. Inside is awash with marble – columns, panels and inlaid heated floors. The ceilings are richly ornamented with domes and complex cornicing to which thirty gilders from Kiev assiduously applied 3.5 kilos of gold leaf. The ‘grand salon’ with an 11 metre high vaulted ceiling has aged paintings of cascading roses and large golden medallions containing pictures of unusual pheasants. The entrance hall has 12 autumn landscapes with ruins and peacocks painted on canvas in Australia and fixed to the walls between marble columns. The ceiling sports six domes and flat areas painted with clouds and sky seen through foliated classical architecture. These are just two of the twenty or so rooms that were decorated. |
